“I have done other branches of my family tree it is the Gayleard one that I keep on returning back to.”
~ Wilfred Gayleard
Starting Off
Hello, and welcome. Many years ago I got interested in my family past and started doing genealogy. I would at times pick it up and put it back down. It is a wonderful hobby with finding some surprises. As Gayleards of my friends put it, it is like a detective game searching for clues and answers. And yes it as been. Although I have done other branches of my family tree it is the Gayleard one that I keep on returning back to. I have run into a lot of roadblocks over the years but more and more records coming online I have managed to clear a few away. So I decided to concentrate this blog to the Gayleard branch that came from the Portsmouth area around 1800 to 1880’s. Although frequently misspelled as Gaylard, Gayland, or Gaylord I can trace the several instances of it being spelled Gayleard. Although I have found Greyhard and Guyheard and several others. For years, I have found several documents with George Gayleard, born around 1808, with his wife Ann Pearce, children; Mary Sarah Ann Elizabeth, George Henry John and my greatgrandfather William Henry.
The Gayleard name, or the spelling of this name, is centered in England and then outwards from there. There are three main locations that I find them being in, First largely London area, Second in Somerset and Third Hampshire.
Through searching for them I discovered a few more along the way and will try to post others I have found. I am hoping to share this with others doing research into the name and hope that others will do the same.
From here they migrate out to the United States, Australia and Canada.
